A Rare-Diagnosis Game

The Daily CBC

Name what could be behind the symptoms. Every answer carries you further around the circulation: out through the arteries, across the capillaries and home through the veins to the heart. The rarer the answer, the rarer the blood cell you earn and the further you travel.

    1. ReadTwo or three symptoms appear.
    2. NameType a diagnosis. You have 60 seconds.
    3. Go FurtherRarer answers carry you deeper through the body.
    How Scoring Works

Every set of symptoms has an answer key of diagnoses that could cause them, sorted into five tiers named after the cells in your blood. The tiers follow how common each cell is: the most common answer earns the most common cell, the Red Blood Cell (10 points), and the rarer the answer, the rarer the cell. Neutrophil (25), Eosinophil (50) and Basophil (75) cover everything in between, and Stem Cell (100) is the rarest of all. Every 50 points carries you into the next vessel, so 400 points gets you all the way back to the heart. Your heart comes in editions: Bronze Edition at 400, Silver Edition at 500, Gold Edition at 600 and Diamond Edition for a perfect 700. Spelling, plurals and common abbreviations are forgiven. An answer that is not in the key is rejected with a shake, and you can keep guessing until the timer runs out. The first valid answer ends the case. Run out of time without one and the case scores zero.
